I had no transportation. Because of my husbands health, he could not make the drive, and can not see well at night. I was going to ride with Eddie Jean Adams (remember her) but on last Thursday she had a tooth pulled and said that she did not feel like going. I haven't driven since 1994. My license were revoked because of health issues. I drive to my neighbors house (0.6 miles) every now and then but that is it. I still CAN drive but NOT suppose to. If I get stopped, they may put me under the jailhouse.
This is more like a letter, not a comment (smile).
In 1996 I was taking a course at the Junior College (usually rode with my husband on his way to work). We were to have an exam, but I wanted to study some more. So, I was driving (not speeding) to school and the State Troopers stopped me. I was telling them I had no license as they were asking for my license. I did have my OLD one with the Dallas address. They asked me where did I live (I was not a mile from the house) and I said here in Paris. And again, I explained to them - well one of them that I usually ride to class with my husband when he went to work at the junior high, and the other one had that instrument checking the truck windows to see if they were too dark. The one talking to me said that that is why they stopped me (windows looked too dark). Anyway, he looked at the license and saw the wrong address and that they were EXPIRED. He went to his car. I held my breath, not knowing what they were going to do. He came back to the truck and said, "Ms. Marks, did you know that you were not suppose to be driving?" I said,"That was what I was trying to tell you, but you kept walking." He stood there looking at me and talking to the other officer. "Are the windows OK?" The other one said, "Oh yeah." "Well, Ms Marks, you are going to have to get out of this truck because..." I interupted him and said, "But, how am I going to get to school?" He started looking around, and then told me when I got home to never get in the truck again!
On my way home I met them, and they did a U-TURN. I saw them and kept going. I made my turn off the highway - they turned. They stopped at this cut-off and I kept going. [I think they were seeing if I actually lived here in Paris.] I don't know!
You did not ask for all this, but I told you anyway.
Well, did you make it? If you did, you saw that I did not. I was so excited finding out about the Gala, and then not to make it - I really feel bad. You said you are in Michigan right now, is this where you live? No, I do not think we have seen each other since North Texas days. I have no idea why you wrote that on the back of your picture. Yes, and I did smile when I read it again. It has been a loooooong time.
Right now, I am in Detroit Michigan but I plan to be back Friday and yes I will be there Saturday. I look forward to seeing you. Have I seen you since North Texas days? I read the statement that you said that I wrote. Why did I write that you were critical? You know its been a long time and I wonder why I wrote that. Do you know why? SMILE!
Hi Carol,
This is the "very nice, critical person to know, but nice, nice, nice." Remember telling me this? I have it written in blue ink on the back of your picture you gave me in 1966.
How have you been? Are you attending the "Gala?" I am trying to get there. I have been talking to Eddie Jean Adams -- remember her? Well, she lives here in Paris, TX also and said that she might come Saturday. If she does I will ride along with her. Hope to see you.
Chuck, you and your family are in my prayers. Sorry to hear of your loss.
Love,
Rachel
p.s. I typed this three times but never saw it posted. Maybe this will go through...
